Levenshulme launches its Volunteer Days

March 21st, 2007

Our first Volunteer Days will start with 24th & 25th March 2007, starting at 11am.
The Levenshulme site has seen an unprecedented uptake of vacant plots in the past 3 months, with up to 70 plots unmanaged for 3 years or more - now all taken. Plot holders were spurred into action following the launch of allotment consultations across Manchester, with recent arrivers keen to do their fair share in running the site.

A YEAR ON THE SHARPES CUP WINNERS PLOT

March 21st, 2007

Seed traysNew PolytunnelRoy sowing carrotsPrepared Bed

The year is now beginning to get under way for all plot holders as the weather is telling us to start sowing and growing. Before we do start lets see what has been done so far this year.

The soil on this site is sandy so work can be continued through the winter and preparations for the year made when time is available. So far the plot has been cleared and the growing areas rotovated ready for planting.

Already this year a new larger polytunnel has been erected and paths laid in it on the plot to increase the covered area for growing crops.

A start has been made by planting onion sets in modules in the green house to provide a good start for them, also the first of the lettuce seeds have been sown in seed tray in the old polytunnel to sow in the tunnel for an early crop.

Some carrots have also been sown in the borders of the small tunnel again for an early crop. The garlic planted last November is growing well and the bed has had to be weeded already!

Friends Provident on Gorton Allotments

March 18th, 2007

Friends Provident get stuck in

Employees of Friends Provident in the City Centre have been getting out and about in East Manchester in the last few weeks. Two separate events have been held, one at Bank Bridge Meadow in Philips Park and the other at the Debdale Alloments in Gorton.

They have been linked with these groups by CSV, a company which links volunteers with projects, and Groundwork, a regeneration charity active in East Manchester.

Friends Provident get ‘dug in!

On Monday 12th March, 8 volunteers began work bright and early at Debdale allotments. They worked to clear one large plot of rubbish and weeds, and created some pathways between neatly dug plots. The allotment group will now be able to let this plot to someone on the waiting list. The day was hailed as a success by the Chairman of Gorton Horticultural Society, Geoff Garrard who said, “They were a great bunch, and worked really hard. We are delighted with the results”.
