MY PLOT SEPTEMBER 2nd TO SEPTEMBER 8th

October 3rd, 2007

colour in the flower border

I have been asked recently what is still growing on the plot, so I thought that I might go through the plot and see. In bed 1 with the tunnel I have a comfrey bed, which has just given its last cut this year and an asparagus bed, which is still growing ferns and recharging the roots for next year. The tunnel has carrots for a late crop, spinach, pot leeks and some chard all for the winter.

Bed 2 is still full of roots sown during the summer and to be used in the winter, plus the courgettes, until we get a frost. The roots are carrots, beetroot, swede, turnips, parsnips and some rhubarb chard and spinach beet.

Rhubarb chard

Tunnel 2 in bed three is running down now as all the tomatoes and cucumbers are just about existing and finishing the last of the friut. The melons have about finished but the peppers, chillies and aubergines are still cropping.

kale

Bed 4 has green manure sown where the onions grew and the brassica frame still has winter cabbage, sprouts and spring cabbage growing. Bed 5 has the remains of the dwarf french beans still in and one block of sweetcorn intertwined with a squash plant. The remainder of the bed contains a good block of leeks , a row of kale and the cabbages that I planted in bottles as an experiment (see photo).

The runner beans (still producing) and climbing french beans are on bed 6 together with the second block of sweetcorn and its squash plant. The third block of sweetcorn( guess what I like!) and another squash finish the area off.

The final two beds are bed 7 which is the main brassica frame and it is still over half full with sprouts (4 rows),  red cabbage, sprouting broccolli and purple sprouting broccolli. The three rows of celery are at one end of the frame. Bed 8 was the potato bed and is now dug and waiting to be manured for next year.

Although it is getting late in the year there is still plenty growing and a lot of crops to keep us going through the winter.
