What a good weekend for getting work done, neither to hot to work nor wet or windy. The best bit is that everything is growing well and making up for lost time.

Every time I walk past the second early potatoes I have to stop and look at the plants - they have grown to a good size but the colour is so vibrant and the marking on the leaves is so pronounced that they shout at you look at me. All the crops planted in the last two weeks are now growing away after settling in for a few days.

The tomatoes planted in tunnel 1 have more than doubled in size and are looking good. Most of the seedlings are now in cold frames hardening off so the side border in tunnel 2 is ready for some of the onions to go in - I know it’s late, but they still produce a reasonable crop.

I must make the effort to clear the weedy areas on the plots this week and try to get the remaining areas dug over and ready to fill with the seedlings in the frames. The strawberries are filling up well and should soon be ready for picking, but the asparagus is now nearly finished and needs to be left to build up the roots for next year.

What a good week it has been for us growers, everything is coming on in leaps and bounds and the seasons are catching up with the calender. I know it always does, but there are times when you begin to wonder. Two weeks ago I had very little in the plot, now I am starting to wonder where all these seedlings are going to go.

The plants that have been in the ground for some time are looking good, the potatoes are beginning to flower and are making lovely plants - lets hope we don’t have a damp and humid spell like last year which will spell blight!

The new strawberry plants have started forming fruits, while the old plants are now full of little berries. The early carrots are ready for a second weeding and a little thinning and the late carrots have all started showing. I will have to thin these and cover them with mesh this week.

The early crops in tunnel 2 are now producing, the peas and broad beans are starting to be picked, the carrots are looking nice but a little small- they can be left for a while. The beetroot is nearly ready for picking and the spring onions are bring picked. the French beans are starting to flower so they will have beans on in a couple of weeks.

The asparagus is cropping well, it will soon be mid-summer’s day and the season will be ended, must make the most of it. I have managed to fill up half of the second brassica frame and to plant out all my climbing beans. The three blocks of sweetcorn have established and are starting to grow.

The seed trays and modules are reducing in number as the seedlings are moved into pots, and the tunnel is being cleared ready for replanting. I have also sown the next set of lettuce to keep the supply coming all summer. The one thing that must not be forgotten at any time is to keep on top of the weeding, in this weather they soon look as if they will take over every time you turn your back to do another job.

What a change over the last week! The warm damp weather has given everything a massive boost of growth. Things that had just got established suddenly looked as if they had been in for several weeks.

The potatoes have doubled in size, the strawberries have started showing small fruits and the comfrey which I just cut is nearly back to the same size as it was before. In the tunnel the crops are getting ready to cut and I have already had two lettuce out of it and the first peas are almost ready.

I have almost prepared the borders in tunnel 1 for the tomatoes and they will be in this week, together with the cucumbers. The number of trays of pots in tunnel 2 keeps reducing as the go into the cold frame and are hardened off then planted out

I have managed to plant out the sweetcorn and some of the dwarf french beans, and have erected the frames for the runner beans and one variety of french bean.

The second brassica frame is erected and ready to be filled - hopefully this week. I have made a start on the flower border between beds 5 and 7 and a row of sweet peas have been planted.

Bank holidays do upset routines, Monday night is when I write this post normally as it is the time when I have most free time. When I get out of step with routine it takes some time to pull things back together.

The warm weather of the last couple of weeks has given a massive boost to growth in all places, outside in the ground and inside the tunnel every thing has jumped in size. The potatoes which only came through some three weeks ago are now all through and earthed up. The strawberries are setting fruit on the old plants and the new plants are setting their second set of flowers.

In the tunnel the carrots are showing their necks and getting a good head of leaf, the peas and beans are setting pods and the beetroot are now the size of golf balls. The salad crops are nearly ready for picking and the grapes will very soon need thinning.

On top of all this the weeds!, as ever, are growing even faster and time must be spent keeping on top of them. The stepover apples and pears are setting fruit as is the plum tree.

I am slowly finishing digging in the manure on the plot and I have cleared the last of the purple sprouting broccoli and removed the frame, ready to reassemble for this years crops. The cold frames are full of pots hardening off ready to plant out and as soon as I take some out there are others to fill the frames up.

How time flies when you are busy, it doesn’t take much to eat into time set aside for jobs when something unexpected comes up. For the last two weeks I have managed to keep up with the allotment but only just, a death in the family certainly makes a difference.

What have I done on the plot in this time? The warmer weather has made a lot of improvement in the growth of plants, and weeds, so all the seeds I had sown have all germinated and grown and have made for a lot of transplanting from trays into modules. Then form modules into small pots and many of the earlier plants are in large pots.

The improved weather has meant that the potatoes are nearly all through and earthed up. The old strawberry plants have grown and are full of flower, while the new plants have trebled in size and started to flower - all the flowers have been removed from the new plants to give them time to make stronger plants before fruiting.

The remaining leeks are all out now because they had started to send up seed heads, not bad I was still picking leeks into the second week of May. The two garlic beds are looking good and the comfrey is ready for it’s first cutting. We have been eating asparagus for the past two weeks and it is sending up new spears every day.

Tunnel 2 is filling up with trays of pots on one side while the middle is full of broad beans,peas, beetroot and spring onions. The other side bed is filling up with letttuce ,spinach and french beans and the end bed is full of carrots. Tunnel 1 is nearly ready for the tomatoes and cucumbers.

I have managed to dig the manure in on several beds and have planted out the onion sets from the trays. I have also erected a frame for sprouts on the same bed and yesterday I filled it with four varieties of sprouts.
