Wellington Road Allotments

The boundary at one end of Wellington Road Allotments is the tree-lined Fallowfield Loop. Wood pigeons and magpies perch in the trees opposite, frequently dropping in for a tasty snack of brassicas or the soft fruit of any unwary gardener who has failed to protect them with netting.

A fox also visits us from time to time adding to the pleasure of working on our small patch of countryside surrounded by houses and flats in the Old Moat Ward in Fallowfield.

It is a small site bounded by a high fence, easily visible from the road and passers-by and more secure now than previously. Three committee members who are regular gardeners have keys to the Trading Hut but, at present, it is opened for purchases only by request. There is an age range of about 60+ years between the youngest plot holder and the oldest and there are as many women as men. Thirteen women (i.e. almost half) rent either whole plots or ½ plots in their own name and regularly work on them.
